DBT Skills Group in NYC

A structured group that teaches the four DBT skill modules, from the practice of Dr. Jesse Finkelstein, a DBT-Linehan Board of Certification Certified Clinician and coauthor of Real Skills for Real Life.

Skills You Practice, Not Just Discuss

A DBT skills group works more like a class than a support group. Each session teaches a specific skill, you practice it during the week, and you bring back what happened.

The group covers the four modules of DBT: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness. Whether it is taken alongside individual therapy is something we decide together in the consultation.

What to Expect

Joining starts with a consultation about your goals and whether the group is the right fit. From there, we:
Agree on what you want from the group
Learn one skill at a time each week
Practice with homework between sessions
Review what worked and adjust

Sessions are structured and active. You leave each one with something specific to practice before the next.

Who the Skills Group Can Help

Skills training is useful well beyond any one diagnosis. If any of these sound familiar, a free consultation is the place to talk it through.
Expand

Intense Emotions

Emotions that arrive faster and stay longer than they do for other people. The group teaches emotion regulation skills, and you practice between sessions so they become habits rather than ideas.

Expand

Crisis Moments

Urges you act on and regret, and hours that feel impossible to get through. The distress tolerance module teaches crisis survival skills such as TIP, STOP and self soothing, to get through the moment without making it worse.

Expand

Relationships

Asking for what you need and saying no without damaging the relationship. The interpersonal effectiveness module covers DEAR MAN, GIVE and FAST, and the group lets you rehearse hard conversations first.

Expand

Parents and Teens

Families building a shared language for the hard moments at home. When parents and teens learn the same skills, including validation and walking the middle path, it is easier to slow down a fight.

Expand

Stress and Overwhelm

Pressure that builds until it spills over into everything else. Mindfulness helps you notice stress early, and emotion regulation skills make you less reactive. Many members come for burnout or work stress rather than a diagnosis.

Not Sure DBT Fits

DBT is not reserved for one diagnosis. It is a set of skills anyone can use. The group suits people who want structure and practice, and works well alongside individual therapy. The free consultation helps decide.

What the Group Covers

The four DBT skill modules, each with a guide on the blog:

Mindfulness

Noticing what is happening, inside and around you, so you can choose a response.

Distress tolerance

Getting through a crisis without making it worse, with skills like STOP and TIP.

Emotion regulation

Understanding emotions and lowering how hard and how often they hit.

Interpersonal effectiveness

Asking, refusing and repairing while keeping both the relationship and your self respect.

Groups meet weekly for a set number of weeks. Ask in the consultation which groups are running and when the next one starts.

Common Questions

Short answers to what people usually ask before joining a skills group.
Expand

What happens in a DBT skills group?

Each session combines a review of last week's practice, a new skill taught in a structured way, and homework for the week ahead. It works more like a class than a support group.

Expand

Do I have to share personal details?

The focus is on learning and practicing skills, not on processing personal history in front of others. You decide what you share.

Expand

How do I join?

Start with a free consultation. We talk about your goals, whether the group fits, and which groups are running. There is no obligation to join after it.

Expand

Which skills does the group cover?

The four DBT modules: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness. The group moves through them in turn, and each one adds practical skills you use between sessions.

Expand

How long does a group run?

Groups meet weekly for a set number of weeks, so you know the commitment up front. Exact dates and length depend on which group is running, and we go over them in the consultation.

Expand

Do I also need individual DBT?

Not always. Some people take the group on its own, and others pair it with individual sessions to apply the skills to their own situations. The consultation is where we work out what fits.
